17 February: Committee on NGOs Adopts Final Report, Recommending 157 Organizations

The 2012 regular session of the Committee on NGOs completed its main work on 8 February, recommending 157 organizations for consultative status and taking note of 375 quadrennial reports of organizations already in status. On 17 February it adopted its draft report.



8 Feb – 14 March: Join the ECOSOC E-Discussion on Jobs, Decent Work and Inclusive Growth

In preparation for the 2012 Substantive Session of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), you are invited to participate in an e-Discussion on “Jobs, Decent Work and Inclusive Growth” from 8 February to 14 March 2012. A joint initiative of DESA, ILO and UNDP, the e-discussion presents a unique opportunity to make your voice heard, and to formulate critical policy messages that will feed directly into the ECOSOC’s Annual Ministerial Review in New York in July 2012. Join the e-discussion, and share this invitation to colleagues who may be interested in participating. 14 February: Commission for Social Development approves seven draft resolutions

Concluding its fiftieth session today, the Commission for Social Development recommended seven draft resolutions for adoption by the Economic and Social Council, covering topics that ranged from the mainstreaming of disability into the international development agenda, to the priority theme for the next session. The Commission’s approval of the drafts capped two weeks of negotiations as well as plenary panel discussions and lively general debates that focused on unemployment, social protection floor initiatives and ways to shrink the widening gap between the rich and poor.  Ministerial-level officials from around the world described national efforts as the Commission considered the most effective and efficient means to lift millions of people out of poverty.



30 January: Resilient People, Resilient Planet: A Future Worth Choosing

The High-level Panel on Global Sustainability established by the Secretary-General in August 2010 to formulate a new blueprint for sustainable development and low-carbon prosperity presented its final report, "Resilient People, Resilient Planet: A Future Worth Choosing", on 30 January. It contains 56 recommendations to put sustainable development into practice and to mainstream it into economic policy as quickly as possible.




27 February - 9 March 2012: Commission on the Status of Women, 56th session
The fifty-sixth session of the Commission on the Status of Women will take place at the United Nations Headquarters in New York from 27 February to 9 March 2012. Representatives from Member States, UN entities, and ECOSOC-accredited non-governmental organizations (NGOs) from all regions of the world will attend the session. The two-week session will include a high-level round table, interactive dialogues and panels, and parallel events. The 2012 session will focus on the following key areas. The priority theme will be the empowerment of rural women and their role in poverty and hunger eradication, development and current challenges. The review theme will be financing for gender equality and the empowerment of women. An emerging issues for discussion is to be determined inter-sessionally.



27 February: Better Jobs for Young People

ECOSOC will hold an Exclusive Event, “Breaking new ground: Partnerships for more and better jobs for young people” on 27 February 2012, from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m., at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. This event will serve as part of the preparatory process for the ECOSOC’s 2012 Annual Ministerial Review (AMR) on “Promoting productive capacity, employment and decent work to eradicate poverty in the context of inclusive, sustainable and equitable economic growth at all levels for achieving the MDGs”, and is organized by the United Nations Department for Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) and the International Labour Organization (ILO), in collaboration with the United Nations Office for Partnerships (UNOP) and the United Nations Global Compact.



8 March: The Role of Business in Empowering Women

Timed to coincide with the International Day of Women, this discussion will enable corporate foundation presidents, emerging market investors, senior UN officials, and government partners to discuss and share lessons learned on the role of strategic partnerships to bridge the gap between women and their business opportunities. The Forum will be built around three interactive panel discussions focused on women and their impact in the following areas: financial inclusion, supply chain and innovation and entrepreneurship. The event is hosted by the United Nations Office for Partnerships and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Business Civic Leadership Center, at the United Nations Headquarters, Conference Room 2, from 10 am to 6 pm. 12-30 March, 104th Session, Human Rights Committee, New York
At its 104th session, to be held in New York, the Human Rights Committee will consider the following reports and country situations during the session: Cape Verde, Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Mozambique, Turkmenistan and Yemen. Country Report Task Forces will consider and adopt list of issues on reports submitted by Philippines, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Paraguay, Portugal, and Turkey. 23-27 April: Commission on Population and Development, 45th session
The Commission on Population and Development will hold its forty-fifth session from 23 to 27 April 2012 at United Nations Headquarters in New York. The theme of the session is "Adolescents and Youth".



7-18 May: 11th session of the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues

The 11th session of the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues will be held in New York from 7 to 18 May. pre-registration is now OPEN. The special theme is "The Doctrine of Discovery: its enduring impact on indigenous peoples and the right to redress for past conquests (articles 28 and 37 of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples)". http://social.un.org/index/IndigenousPeoples.aspx

21-30 May: 2012 Resumed Session, Committee on NGOs
The 2012 Resumed Session of the Committee on NGOs will take place from 21 to 30 May 2012. The session is expected to consider new applications for status by NGOs as well as applications deferred from earlier sessions. It will also review quadrennial reports of NGOs in general or special consultative status. The Committee is expected to meet again on 8 June 2012 to adopt its report of the session. The session's recommendations will be sent to the Economic and Social Council for its approval in July of 2012.


20-22 June: Rio+20 Conference
Organized to mark the 20th anniversary of the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED), in Rio de Janeiro, and the 10th anniversary of the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) in Johannesburg, the Conference will include Heads of State and Government to secure renewed political commitment for sustainable development, assess the progress to date and the remaining gaps in the implementation of the outcomes of the major summits on sustainable development, and address new and emerging challenges is being organized in pursuance of General Assembly Resolution 64/236 (A/RES/64/236).
