General Assembly Elects 18 Members of Economic and Social Council, Confirms 13 States Nominated to Programme and Coordination Committee
On October 29, the General Assembly elected 18 members of the Economic and Social Council to serve three-year terms beginning 1 January 2015. Those newly elected were Argentina, Austria (re-election), Brazil, Burkina Faso (re-election), Estonia, France (re-election), Germany (re-election), Ghana, Greece (re-election), Honduras, India (re-election), Japan (re-election), Mauritania, Pakistan, Portugal (re-election), Trinidad and Tobago, Uganda and Zimbabwe.
The Global Forum on Youth Policies: world's youth call for a seat at the policy table
The Global Forum on Youth Policies took place in Baku between 28 and 30 October. Bringing together an estimated 700 youth policy experts – from governments and parliaments, youth networks and movement, research and development communities, the gathering helped amplify voices passionate about developing and implementing national policies tailored to the specific needs, aspirations and demands of today's young people.
UN expert urges Member States to consider justice as pillar of development
In presenting her latest report to the General Assembly, Gabriela Knaul, the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights defenders, cautioned delegates over the current development framework established by the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), stating that it was "too limited conceptually to fully account for the human experience of development." She urged Member States to adopt a human-rights based approach to development, suggesting that they insert "explicit references" to human rights standards and standards related to access to justice in the post-2015 sustainable development goals and targets.
20 October - 7 November: 59th Session - Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women
The Committee will meet in Geneva and will examine the reports of the following countries during its 59th session: Belgium, Brunei Darussalam, China, Ghana, Guinea, Poland, Solomon Islands and Venezuela.
10 - 13 November: Third UN World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction - Prepcom II
The Third UN World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction and its preparatory process welcome the participation and contributions of all relevant stakeholders, including parliaments, civil society, the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, non-governmental organizations, national platforms for disaster risk reduction, focal points for the Hyogo Framework for Action, local government representatives, scientific institutions and the private sector, as well as organizations of the United Nations system and intergovernmental organizations.
20 November: High-level meeting of the General Assembly on the twenty-fifth anniversary of the adoption of the Convention on the Rights of the Child
This year marks the 25th anniversary of the adoption of the Convention on the Rights of the Child. On this occasion, the General Assembly passed a resolution to organize a high-level meeting. This is a critical moment to take stock of progress, suggest ways to bridge implementation gaps and make a strong call for make the vision of the Convention a reality for all children, as well as to highlight innovative approaches that can transform the lives of children everywhere.
2-13 February: Committee on Enforced Disappearances (CED) 8th Session
The Committee will meet in Geneva and will examine the reports of the following countries during its 8th session: Armenia, Mexico and Serbia. It will also consider lists of issues for Iraq and Montenegro.
