General Assembly designates 19 November as World Toilet Day
In an effort to make sanitation a global development priority, the General Assembly designated 19 November as World Toilet Day. The GA urged Member States and relevant stakeholders to encourage behavioral change and implement policies to increase access to sanitation among the poor, promote hygiene, provide basic sanitation services and sewerage, as well as waste-water treatment. The resolution also recognized the role civil society play in raising awareness of this issue. Almost 2,000 children die every day from preventable diarrhoeal diseases, and poor sanitation and water supply result in economic losses estimated at $260 billion annually in developing countries.
