Committee on NGOs holds Informal Sessions
The Committee on Non-Governmental Organizations held informal meetings on 10-11 December at United Headquarters to review 220 new applications from NGOs seeking consultative status to the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). 115 applications were received from NGOs in developing countries. NGO submitting applications are working on a range of issues: rural development, microfinance, gender equality, protecting the environment and children’s rights.

The Committee is vetting NGO applications and recommending general, special or roster status on the basis of the applicant’s mandate, governance and financial structure. Once accredited, NGOs can attend ECOSOC meetings, as well as receive different levels of benefits. Members of the NGO Committee for the period 2011-2014 are: Belgium, Bulgaria, Burundi, China, Cuba, India, Israel, Kyrgyzstan, Morocco, Mozambique, Nicaragua, Pakistan, Peru, Russian Federation, Senegal, Sudan, Turkey, United States of America, and Venezuela. The Committee on NGO’s regular session for 2014 is scheduled for 21-30 January in New York.
