Tackling water, sanitation and energy key to sustainable future
Addressing the water, sanitation and sustainable energy crises are essential for the achievement of development goals. As General Assembly President John Ashe opened the Thematic Debate on this issue on 18 February, he urged Member States to adopt integrated policies and innovative strategies to tackle these challenges.

He cited that 783 million people live without clean water; 2.5 billion have no adequate sanitation; and 1.4 billion people are without access to electricity. The two-day gathering was the first in the series of debates and high-level events Mr. Ashe will host this year to provide a platform for Member States and other stakeholders to set the stage for the post-2015 development agenda.
