Committee on NGOs holds Informals ahead of Resumed SessionThe Committee on Non-Governmental Organizations held an informal meeting on 28 April at United Nations Headquarters to review 151 new applications from NGOs seeking consultative status to the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). NGO submitting applications are working on a range of issues: rural development, microfinance, gender equality, protecting the environment and children’s rights. The Committee is vetting NGO applications and recommending general, special or roster status on the basis of the applicant’s mandate, governance and financial structure.
Once accredited, NGOs can attend ECOSOC meetings, as well as receive different levels of benefits. Members of the NGO Committee for the period 2011-2014 are: Belgium, Bulgaria, Burundi, China, Cuba, India, Israel, Kyrgyzstan, Morocco, Mozambique, Nicaragua, Pakistan, Peru, Russian Federation, Senegal, Sudan, Turkey, the United States of America, and Venezuela. The Committee on NGOs' resumed session for 2014 is scheduled for 19-28 May in New York. The Committee will meet again on 6 June to adopt its report of the session.
