19 September: UN General Assembly High-level Meeting to Address Large Movements of Refugees and Migrants
On 19 September 2016, the General Assembly will hold a high-level meeting to respond to large movements of refugees and migrants.

The Secretary General’s report In Safety and Dignity: Addressing Large Movements of Refugees and Migrants (A70/59) provides a set of recommendations to improve the safety and dignity in large movements of both refugees and migrants, to adopt a global compact on responsibility-sharing for refugees, and to develop a global compact for safe, regular and orderly migration. Under each of the three “pillars”, the report spells out concrete actions to address the root causes of large-scale movements, to protect people on-the-move, and to facilitate safe, regular, orderly and responsible migration. The report also announces the launch of a global campaign to counter xenophobia.

At the request of the Office of the President of the General Assembly, the Non-Governmental Liaison Service and the Department of Economic and Social Affairs are facilitating a process to identify civil society attendees and speakers for the 19 September meeting and for the 18 July informal multi-stakeholder hearings.
